Clear aligner treatment
A discreet, removable approach to aligning teeth and correcting the bite.
Treatment overview
Clear Aligners, also commonly known as Invisalign®, are a modern orthodontic appliance used to align teeth and correct the bite. Instead of metallic brackets and wires, treatment uses transparent removable aligners together with small tooth-coloured attachments placed on selected teeth.
There are multiple clear aligner systems available, including Spark Aligners®, Angel Aligners® and Invisalign®. Your orthodontist can discuss which system and treatment approach is most appropriate for your individual needs.
Treatment advantages
A customised aligner plan can be used to guide tooth movement and bite correction.
The smooth removable trays can provide a comfortable alternative to fixed orthodontic appliances.
Transparent aligners and tooth-coloured attachments make treatment far less noticeable.
Aligners can be removed for eating, brushing, sport and important events.
The process
Treatment uses a series of removable aligners that progressively guide the teeth towards their planned positions. Small tooth-coloured attachments may be bonded to the teeth to help the aligners deliver the required movements.
Aligners generally need to be worn for around 22 hours each day and are removed for eating, brushing and other necessary occasions. Clear aligners can be excellent for some orthodontic problems, but they are not the best appliance for every case.
Individual suitability
Clear Aligners can be an option for patients of different ages with a range of smile and bite concerns. Because treatment depends on consistent full-time wear, they are often particularly well suited to adults.
For some children and teenagers, braces may provide a more predictable option. We assess appliance suitability individually rather than assuming one system is right for everyone.
Dental monitoring technology can allow progress photos to be taken from home and reviewed remotely. This can help the orthodontic team monitor treatment between visits and adjust the timing of appointments when appropriate.
