Minimal discomfort
RME treatment is often well tolerated and can be used in children from a relatively young age when indicated.
Expansion & early treatment
Specialist expansion treatment for narrow upper jaws and crossbites during growth.
Treatment overview
Orthodontic expanders, also called Rapid Maxillary Expanders (RME), are appliances used to treat a narrow upper jaw and crossbite. The appliance is custom-made for the patient and is activated using a small key.
Expansion is most useful while the upper jaw is still developing, which is why assessment at the right stage of growth matters.
Treatment advantages
RME treatment is often well tolerated and can be used in children from a relatively young age when indicated.
Correcting a narrow palate during growth can address the transverse jaw problem before later comprehensive treatment.
When used at the appropriate developmental stage, expansion can produce substantial correction of a narrow upper jaw.
The process
The expander gradually widens the upper jaw as the key is turned according to the activation schedule provided by the orthodontic team. The appliance remains in the mouth during the expansion phase.
This treatment takes advantage of the developing upper jaw before the two halves become more mature and resistant to expansion.
Individual suitability
Expanders are commonly used for children with a narrow upper jaw or crossbite. The old Go Orthodontics treatment information identifies ages around 8–10 years as a common treatment period, with selected older patients potentially remaining suitable depending on skeletal maturity.
Because expansion is a specialised treatment, suitability is confirmed after an orthodontic assessment.
