Why the teen years matter

Permanent teeth, active growth and a useful treatment window.

By the teenage years, most permanent teeth have erupted and the full alignment and bite can be assessed. Remaining facial growth may also help with selected bite corrections.

Our role is to make the clinical plan clear while involving your teenager in the decisions that affect them—from appliance choice and appearance to hygiene, sport and treatment routines.

01Individual diagnosisWe assess teeth, jaws, bite, facial balance and remaining growth.
02A realistic appliance choiceWe compare control, visibility, responsibility and lifestyle—not appearance alone.
03Shared ownershipYour teenager understands what treatment involves and how they can help it stay on track.

Benefits of teen orthodontics

Designed for health, function and confidence.

The value of treatment extends beyond straight front teeth. A personalised plan considers bite function, cleaning, stability and how a young person feels throughout care.

01

Build confidence

A smile your teenager feels comfortable showing can support confidence during an important stage of social and personal development.

02

Improve alignment and bite

Treatment can align crowded or spaced teeth and improve how the upper and lower teeth meet.

03

Strengthen daily habits

Brushing, appliance care and regular reviews help reinforce the routines needed to protect dental health.

Teen treatment options

Different appliances. One specialist plan.

Metal braces, clear braces, growth modification and clear aligners each have a different role. The right choice depends on the diagnosis, remaining growth, required movements and how reliably the appliance will be used.

Timing and growth

Why treatment often starts in the earlier teen years.

Permanent teeth are usually available to align, while useful growth may remain for selected bite corrections. The exact starting point still depends on dental development—not age alone.

  • Most permanent teeth have erupted or are close to erupting
  • Selected jaw and bite corrections may benefit from remaining growth
  • Alignment, bite and facial balance can be planned together
  • School, sport, music and important events can be considered
  • Appliance choice can reflect both clinical needs and responsibility

Braces or clear aligners?

Choose for predictability—not popularity.

Some movements are more predictable with braces; some teens are excellent candidates for aligners. We will show you which options suit the diagnosis and what each asks of the patient.

Common questions

Teen orthodontics, made clearer.

What is the best age to start teen orthodontic treatment?+

There is no single age. Treatment often begins once most permanent teeth have erupted and the timing is useful for the individual bite and growth pattern. A specialist assessment determines the best starting point.

Are clear aligners better than braces for teenagers?+

Not automatically. Aligners are discreet and removable but depend on consistent wear. Braces stay in place and may offer more predictable control for some problems. We compare all suitable options at consultation.

Can my teenager still play sport or a musical instrument?+

Usually, yes. We can advise on mouthguards for contact sport and practical adaptation for wind instruments based on the appliance selected.

How long will treatment take?+

Duration varies with complexity, growth, appliance choice and cooperation. Your consultation includes an individual estimate and a written fee before treatment begins.
